Using worn ultrasonic instruments can cause harm to clinicians, patients, and the practice with the potential of fraud if you are not providing standard of care services. While we have had solutions to address hand instrument integrity for many years, the time is now to address power instrument integrity.

A 2022 survey revealed that 82% of dentists are aware that ultrasonic instruments need to be measured to ensure clinical effectiveness. Yet, 64% reported they do not have a system in place in their practices to evaluate the instruments. Additionally, 35% of dental hygienists indicated they never measured their power instruments. Lack of time was the most common reason.

This interactive course will examine ethical issues of instrument integrity with a focus on developing consistent systems to assess ultrasonic inserts/tips (UIT) performance. Attendees will be given a simple 5-step checklist for evaluating their UIT inventory.

Every conversation has consequences. Once an assessment is performed, the clinician must develop and present a compelling business case to obtain the power instruments they need. The language used and the approach taken will make or break the opportunity to purchase new instruments. A systematic approach will allow you to make a collaborative decision, with your team leaders, on power instrument investments.

Attendees will learn the six strategies to develop a customized business case. Dialogue, scripting, and communication templates will be available. The goal is to deliver the best possible care to patients while protecting the clinicians’ health, license, and practice.
