Learning Objectives:

  • Describe common dental anomalies, including their clinical and radiographic features.
  • Explain the developmental and environmental factors associated with specific anomalies.
  • Recognize signs and symptoms of dental anomalies during clinical and radiographic evaluations.
  • Evaluate the potential impact of anomalies on caries risk, periodontal health, and occlusion.
  • Develop effective communication and referral strategies to manage patients with identified anomalies.

Dental anomalies; variations in tooth number, shape, size, and position, are more than rare findings, they can significantly affect oral health, esthetics, and function. Yet many dental hygienists report feeling underprepared to recognize and manage these complex conditions during routine care.  This course offers a deep dive into common dental anomalies, including agenesis, microdontia, macrodontia, impactions, transpositions, and supernumerary teeth. Attendees will learn how to distinguish developmental anomalies from pathological changes, identify red flags in both clinical and radiographic exams, and understand when and how to collaborate with the dentist or refer to a specialist.  Through case-based visuals, diagnostic frameworks, and real-world examples, participants will build confidence in discussing anomalies with patients, documenting findings, and anticipating associated risks such as caries susceptibility, periodontal complications, or occlusal imbalance. This session equips dental hygienists with the tools to move from passive observers to proactive contributors in the diagnosis and management of dental anomalies, ultimately improving long-term patient outcomes.
