After spending time observing medical colleagues, it is apparent that their approach to chronic care management is very different from ours as dental professionals. We are taught to "treat" dental disease, rather than manage and prevent progression. We can learn a lot from the medical approach and how education, self-management, and motivational techniques can improve our patients’ outcomes. This mindset shift is important to understand the complex risk factors for disease progression and improve outcomes for patients.
