Course Objectives:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Analyze the recent legal and scientific developments concerning fluoride and their implications for dental hygiene practices.
  2. Evaluate the historical successes and emerging risks of water fluoridation as a public health measure.
  3. Assess the potential impact of reduced fluoride access on underserved populations and dental health disparities.
  4. Develop strategies to integrate alternative non-invasive preventive measures, such as hydroxyapatite-based products and targeted fluoride applications, into practice.
  5. Formulate patient communication approaches to address concerns about fluoride and its evolving role in oral health.
  6. Advocate for policies and practices that balance oral health benefits with systemic health considerations, aligning with the latest research and public health priorities.

In light of the September 27, 2024, federal ruling requiring the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to strengthen fluoride regulations, dental professionals must adapt to a changing landscape of fluoride use and its implications for oral and systemic health. This course explores the historical and current role of fluoride in preventive care, recent research highlighting potential risks, and practical strategies to prepare for potential regulatory changes. Attendees will gain a balanced understanding of fluoride's benefits and controversies, learn to advocate for evidence-based care, and explore alternative non-invasive preventive solutions to protect patients and communities.
